QUESTION BY MR. LINKLATER,

Wellington, July 20. In the House of Representatives to-day Mr. Linklater (Manawatu) gave notice of his intention to ask the Prime Minister whether he has seen the following cable under date, London, July 6, 1927: “The British and Canadian Governments have concluded an agreement under the Empire Settlement Act for one of the most constructive of modern land-settlement schemes, involving the settlement of British boys in Canada and beginning on April 1, 1928. The British and Canadian Government now propose, jointly, to expend £1,000,000 during the next ten years in the form of recoverable advances to assist suitable British boys, aged from 14 to 20, to take up farming in Canada with the prospect of a definite career. The new scheme aims at curtailing the period of waiting to make their own purchase of land. Boys, when 21 years of age, provided they have acquired the necessary training experience and saved approximately £IOO, will be eligible for a cash advance not exceeding £SOO for the purchase of farm stock and equipment”—and whether he proposes to initiate a similar agreement with the British Government under the Empire Settlement Act to enable the British boys to'be brought out to New Zealand under approved schemes —namely, Flock House boys, public school boys, secondary school boys, Salvation Army boys, etc.—to receive advances for the purpose of farm stock and equipment when they have acquired the necessary experience and saved a satisfactory portion, of their wags toward this end?

Mr. Linklater states that Flock House boys are given the greatest encouragement by the trustees to save their wages under a promise that a substantial subsidy will bo added from the fund when they are mature, and have proved themselves competent, trust-worthy and thrifty-
