The Ms| Highways Council lias issued a Statement of the average costs of maintenance per mile on 'main highways in the No. 0 Highways District. The various highways, with maintenance costs and the local authority controlling them, were shown as follows: —

Wellington-Auckland Highway: Waikanae to Otaki River section; 8J miles; Horowhenua County Council controlling kody. Expenditure for year: Main Highways Board £653, Horowhenua County £546, total £1199; cost per mile £137.

Same highway: Otaki to Waikawa stream section, 7 miles; Highways Board £433, Horowhenua County £346, total £779; cost per mile £lll.
