HERD TESTING.

MANA'WIATU ASSOCIATION. MONTHLY MEETING The regular monthly meeting of the Manawatu Herd Testing Association was held on Thursday, Mr. P. J. Legg presiding. There were also present: Messrs F. Farmer, F. Woods, F. Robin, W. S. Fell, W. E. Thomas and the secretary (Mr. J. Ferguson). In reply to a request to introduce herd testing into the Bulls district, Mr. K. W. Dalrymple, chairman of the Rangitikei Co-Operative Dairy Company, Ltd., wrote stating that a meeting for those interested had been called for July 23 at Bulls. So far only 10 or 12 suppliers were willing to co-operate in the matter, but it was hoped that the meeting which the secretary of the Herd Testing Association would attend, would result in ascertaining the feeling of the suppliers generally in forming a group. —Arrangements were completed by the meeting for the gathering at Bulls. The New Zealand Co-operative Herd Testing Association wrote reminding the local body that it was practically the only association outside the federation. It was recalled that, when the federation first approached the Government for a subsidy, the action of the Rangiotu Association in not only dissociating itself from the effort, but going to the extent of writing to the department stating that it did not require the subsidy, gave the department just the opportunity to refuse the application. It was possible the matter would be held up indefinitely unless a solid front was presented and the appeal concluded with the remark that, unless a federation of herd testing associations was obtained, there would be no uniformity of methods nor would the movement become a national one.

—-The secretary was instructed to reply stating that there had been a misunderstanding in the past, but the association would consider federation in the future. It was resolved that the various dairy companies in the district be circulated requesting them to consider flolowing the lead of the Awahuri Dairy Company, which subsidises its suppliers who are members of the Herd Testing Association to the extent of Is per cowl

Accounts totalling £92 14s 6d were passed for payment.
