A NELSON MYSTERY.
VICTIM OF ASSAULT LOSES WAD OF NOTES.

Mystery surrounds the circumstances under which a man at present lying in the Public Hospital came by his serious injuries, including a broken legl Only meagre details are available, but the man, whose name is Ryan, from Redhills Station, Tophouse, booked at the Trafalgar Hotel on Saturday. Late on Saturday evening he had two drinks, then left the hotel in a taxi with some other men.
About 2 o’clock on Sunday morning a boarder occupying one' of the rooms on the first floor, heard a bang, and a few minutes later the night poster found Ryan lying on a settee in the lounge, just inside the main door, with , black eyes and other injuries. The porter called the, proprietor, and it was soon seen that the man’s condition was serious. He was attended at the hotel until later in the morning, when a doctor was summoned. He ordered the injured man to hospital, and the report from th ehospital, and the report from the hospiabout. Questioned yesterday, when he had regained consciousness, Ryan said he could remember nothing after getting in the taxi. He said he had £SO in his possession the previous evening, but the money was gone when his clothing was searched yesterday.
