CATCHING A THIEF.
INK ON THE DOOR HANDLE
How a shopkeeper stopped a leakage from his till and caught a young thief in a carefully laid trap, was told at the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui on Saturday (says the Chronicle). Detective Revell said that on three occasions recently the shopkeeper had missed money from his till. P e was determined to catch the theif, and on Friday he marked n 10s note, which he left in the till, and smeared a door handle with ink. The note disappeared, and accused (an employee) was found with ink on his hands 'and the money in his possession. The youth admitted having taken £1 on a previous aceasion.
“It seems that this young man is mixing with others who have more money to spend than he has, and he has been trying to keep pace with them,” said the detective. “He has a liking for jazz parties.” The magistrate (Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M.), said he would like a little more information concerning accused, who was remanded.
