NEWS AND NOTES
Alleging that he had been injured by negligent, driving of a motor lorry which backed unexpectedly and jambed him against another car, S. L. Rogers claimed from John Smith Truman, builder, a sum of £39 12s damages in the Christchurch S.M. Court yesterday. Magistrate Young found negligence proved and awarded £2O damages. The trawler Midi Mulmul, when off Montague Island, Sydney, caught a monster sea lion. The net broke, and it got loose on the deck, where for an hour it kept the crew lively in evading attacks which it made with bared, danger-ous-looking teeth. Eventually it Hopped back into the sea. Desert travellers may soon be able to cross enormous stretches of sand in comfort similar to that enjoyed by people who travel on t ie sea (says 'the Christchurch Star), Such is the view of an inventor who proposes to build a monster vehicle, a veritable ocean liner on land, capable of accommodating 300 passengers, who would have no fear ol hunger, thirst, or the dreaded sanestorms. Forty-foot wheels, rimmed with paddle-like blades to gain a linn foothold on the shifting sands,
will be propelled by huge petrol mo tors in the hull, capable of sending the vehicle along at 20 miles an hour. The steering apparatus and the pilot house will be at the front of the 300 feet long craft, which will have windowed cabins. A powerful searchlight will cast its beam over the sands at night. The Pukeora Sanatorium —that scattered collection of wards and shelters at the top of the hill of the same name four miles to the south of Waipukurau—is no conservative institution, and in its efforts to stamp out disease, opens its doors to all classes and nationalities (says the Napier Telegraph). In its commodious and well-kept dining room there sit at one table an Englishman, a Serbian, two Australians, a. South Sea Islander, a Russian, an American, and a New Zealander. This cosmopolitan collection of races is known in the institution as the “League of Nations,” but questions of international moment are debarred from its mealtime debates.
