HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

COMMITTEE MEETING. A committee meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in Ross’s rooms last night, presided over by Mr. D. Christie (President). There were also present: Messrs E. J. Murphy, Peryman, Tyer, John Ross, Jas. Ross, Nicholas, R. Hornblow, Walton, Mesdnmes Barr, Murphy, Procter, Baker, Heaseman, McMurray, Misses Speirs, J. Ross and the secretary (Mrs. Moore). Apologies for absence were reeeifed from Mr. Nye and Mesdames Ogilvy and P. Easton.

The schedule for the Bulb Show was scrutinised. The open class was deleted; decorated tables added in the decoration classes; biscuits, collection, four of each, added to the cookery and other minor alterations made and the schedule adopted. One exhibitor stated having won special prizes two years running, but the awards had not been awarded. —It was decided to write to the donor in connection with same.

The following judges were appointed’':—Bujbs, cut blooms and vegetables, Mr. Gibson (Marton); cookery, Mr. Whitehead (Palmerston North); decorative, Mrs. W. M. Clark (Levin).

It was decided that the date of the show be Tuesday, September 13th.

The question of arranging for afternoon tea was left over until next meeting.

Mrs. McMurray said as she had advertised her collection of bulbs for sale, but as no sale had been effected would this fact prohibit her from exhibiting? The president said that as no sale had taken place she would not be debarred.

It was pointed out that the rules prohibited exhibitors from showing as amateurs if they traded in plants, but there was nothing to prevent the exchange of same. Mr. Murphy gave notice of motion to amend the rule to permit exhibitors to sell surplus bulbs.

The sub-committee’s action in purchasing tables was endorsed. The president said the society was now well equipped and had a balance in hand of £22 to start the season, which he said, was a very satisfactory state of affairs. Mrs. Procter gave notice of motion to increase the number of committee from 10 to IG, men and women respectively. The secretay tendered her resignation, which was received with regret and on the motion of the chairman it was decided to record the society’s appreciation of Mrs. Moore’s services on the minutes. In referring to the services of Mrs. Moore, the president stated that the success of any society depended to a large extent upon the secretary and this applied to the Foxton Society. Mrs. Moore had filled the position with marked ability for four years and her resignation wo uld be a serious loss to the society. He hoped that at a future date Mrs. Moore would again till the position. Rev. Walton (a past president) and Mr. G. A. Tyer (treasurer) endorsed the President’s remarks, expressing regret that Mrs. Moore was unable to continue as secretary.

Mrs. Moore in thanking the speakers for their kind remarks thanked the committee for its assistance without which the work of the society would not have gone on so smoothly. The work had been a pleasure to her. Mr. 11. Hepner donated £5 to the society for. a points prize in the rose section at the summer show. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the donor and to draw up conditions goversisg the award.

The following donations were acknowledged : —Mr. A. S. Easton £2 2s, Mf\ J. Linklater M.P. £1 Is, Mr. F. Robinson £l, Mrs. F. Robinson 10s, Mr. M. E. Perreau 10s fid, Mr. J. K. Horn-blow 10s fid. Mr. W. H. Nicholas was then elected secretary.

Mr. Nicholas also paid a tribute to Mrs. Moore. As a new arrival in Foxton some months ago one of his first queries had been as to whether there was a horticultural society in existence locally? He said the reply to his question had been that there was a very good horticultural society operating in Foxton and that the success of the shows had been due to a great extent to the efforts of the secretary, Mrs. Moore. He hoped that he would be able to carry out his duties as secretary as well as Mrs. Moore had done.
