PERSONAL.

The death occurred at Waitara last week of Mrs. 11. H. Wood, the last woman survivor of the pioneers who came to New Plymouth in the William Bryan, the first ship to bring settlers to Taranaki. Landing there as a girl of 10 years, on March 31, 1841, Mrs. Wood lived to have first-hand knowledge of all stages of settlement of the district U P to the present day. Her death at the age of 90 removes a personality of outstanding interest. Mrs. Wood used to relate, in connection with her family’s first few weeks at New Plymouth, that a big feast provided on the beach by the Maoris was much Enjoyed by the settlers. Later, one of the whalers, who were there long before the settlers, told her that had she known the purpose of the least she would not have enjoyed it. Three important chiefs, the man told her, were meeting to decide whether or not all the white people should be killed before the arrival of the second ship. Two of the chiefs favoured leaving them alone, and one urged that they be massacred. The majority ruled.
