SHANNON BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION.

ENGINE FALLS DOWN BANK.

Owing to the Manawatu River having been in constant flood since the work began, the task of erecting the Shannon-Foxton road bridge has proved a more difficult one than was expected. Difficulties have been arising constantly, but. the worst of all was experienced on a recent morning, when the locomotive which bad been used for hauling material to the side of the bridge, from what is at present the. main road, jumped the rails, and rolled some twelve feet down a bank, until checked by a cabbage tree.

The task of raising the engine back on to the line took some four hours, when it. was found that the castings of one of the wheels were broken. This, it is anticipated, will delay matters for some days. The driver himself was fortunate in escaping from severe injury, suffering only from a few bruises and from shock.
