An epidemic of measles among adults lias occurred at Raetihi. The complaint so far has only been of a mild form.
The people of Wellington consume .09 pints of milk per head daily. In 1917 the consumption was considered to he half a pint. The average daily consumption in Wellington is 7GOO gallons. “You understand, Noho, that unless you pay £2 per month you will go to gaol,” said Mr. R. AY. Tate, S.M., at the Opiinake Court to a Pmigarehu native who had consented to an order for that amount.'He promptly and gleefully replied: all te petter place. I peon there once. That petter than pay £2 a month!”
The seventh big crossword puzzle competition in “Humour" commences in (be next week’s issue. Big cash prizes are offered and this taken in conjunction with the weekly joke competition makes “Humour” quite a profitable magazine for the buyer. Undoubtedly “Humour” is one of the best threepenny magazines on the market. Its weekly survey in picture and story of the humour of the world is most interesting.
At the little country township of Okato, about 29 miles from New Plymouth, a storm centre in the days of the Maori AA’nrs, the settlers decided that the cemetery required a clean up. There was no money for the purpose, but- that did not prove a bar to getting the work done. A working bee was decided upon, about GO settlers turned out with spades, shovels and wheel l harrows, and a day’s work saw the neglected cemetery put in good order.
' At the Lyttelton Police Court on Thursday the chief steward of the American steamer AVest Nivaria was charged with being found in possession of dutiable goods comprising 5000 cigarettes. Johnston’s cabin was searched and a carton containing 5000 cigarettes was found in a clothes’ locker. Accused said he had overlooked the cigarettes and made no attempt to conceal them. Accused was fined £25 in defaul one month.
At the inquest at Auckland concerning the death of John Melville Lord, a middle-aged man found dead in a house at Arch Hill, a verdict of suicide by gas poisoning was returned. Evidence was given that deceased was married, but lived apart from his wife. He was very depressed yesterday morning and said the probation officer told him lie would have to go back to bis wife. But he would die rather than do so. On returning home in the evening the man with whom lie boarded found him. lying dead before the kitchen, stove with the gas turned on.
Some people are lucky. Last week an Auckland sport gave a friend £1 to put on a horse at the Auckland trots for him as he was unable to attend himself. He told his friend that if the horse won to put the winnings on a certain horse in. the next race, and if it won to put all up on a third horse in a later race. Hearing that the first two horses bad won and bad paid substantial dividends, he hired a taxi to take him to the course to prevent his friends putting all up on the third horse. He was unable to find his friend for some time, but eventually spotted him coming away from the totatisator. When the friend informed him that he had placed all the winnings on the third choice as instructed the sport was very angry. However, the horse won and paid a double figure price much to his surprise. The sport is reported to have won over £ooo for his £1 investment.
