YOUTHS COMMITTED TO SUPREME COURT.

A FARCICAL PROCEDURE,

Dunedin, Last Night

Ronald William Winton and Noel James Francis Campbell were charged at the City Police Court to-day with having at Clarksville entered by day the house of John Butler and stealing therefrom food and a torch, of a total value of 20s.

Mr. White, for the accused, said it was a paltry charge and they only broke into the place because they wanted food. He suggested that the charge should be reduced to one of common theft when they would plead guilty. It was a case in which they should get probation.

The Chief-Detective said he was of opinion that the case should go to the Supreme Court. Wiuton had been convicted before. Mr. White said accused were twenty-one years of age. The Magistrate said that considering the age of the accused Jie would have no hesitation in dealing with the case himself. But he had to take into consideration the views of the police. It seemed almost an absurdity to send them to the Supreme Court. “It certainly seems to be rathei’ farcical and I quite agree with Mi. White,” added the Magistrate. Accused were committed for sentence to the Supreme Court and were released in their own recognisances of £SO, provided they reported daily to the police.
