A SERIOUS MATTER
N OMINATING MIG RANTS
“Nominating migrants is a seri-
ous business,” said the Minister of Labour (Hon. G. J. Anderson) in the House of Representatives last night when replying to criticism of the Government immigration policy. Tn the opinion of the Minister no person should nominate a migrant unless lie is prepared to undertake what he has contracted, and what lie has led the Department to believe ho can carry out. Returns for the year which ended on March 31 last, added the Minister, showed that 37 per cent, of the total migrants were men, 30 per cent, women, and 33 per cent, children. Some 14 per cent, were farmers, leaving 23 per cent, of the men who might come into competition with the Labour market. Homes and employment were found for migrants who were nominated. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. TT. E. Holland) : Thai does not follow. The Minister: II does. Referring to statements made abont advertisements displayed in England, the ‘Minister said that the advertisements were inserted by shipping companies and passenger agents, and were not authorised by the New Zealand Government. Af one time, hut not now, the Government advertised lor farm labourers and domestics.
