BOOKMAKERS
A writer in the Wanganui Chronicle says that bookmakers “are a curse to young men receiving small salaries anil are often the means of them falling into disgrace besides. They are receiving moneys that should be going into legitimate bu-
siness, which might relieve the unemployed. They are also a big drawback to the racing clubs, to which they pay no (axes, and are sometimes the means of lpiving horses “stiffened'' and, while they receive the benefit of twelve and a half per cent, that is slopped out of I lie money invested by the clubs for working expenses, they only pay out certain limits which are worked on a concertina principle to suit themselves. Their latest ‘gag’ is ‘second day doubles.' which means that, if a person fakes a double at eleven o'clock and the horse is scratched at nine, he loses his money and has no'show of winning. The fact of the matter is they are a curse to all concerned."
