FLOOD MENACE. ■ The President referred to the Hood menace at Whirokino, which was proving detrimental to Foxton. In the past, lie said, flood waters affected this area last of all but this year for some reason or other, the Whirokino was the, first affected, thereby blocking I lie main south road. Mr. Perreau said the reason for Hie flood affecting the Whirokino early this year was due to the extensive banking at Makerua. Mr. Ross considered that probably the trouble was,due to lack of proper banking. The President said that some time ago high-land was acquired by the Manawatu County Council for a new road through the flooded area, but apart from a survey no work had yet been carried out. Mr. Ross said that if the road had been three feet higher from the Whirokino bridge to the Government drain, the flood would not ‘block traffic. It was decided that a letter be written to the- Moutoa Drainage Board urging them to take the necessary steps to improve the banking between the Shannon and Whirokino Bridges to prevent the Hooding of the Whirokino road as such is detrimental to the best interests of Foxton. and it was also decided that a letter lie forwarded the Manawatu County Council asking what steps are being taken to carry out tlu- deviation of the road from the Whirokino Bridge to No. I Line, Foxton. POST OFFICE DIRECTORY. It was decided to request the local Postmaster to obtain the la- ' test copy of Stone’s Directory for use in the post office by the general public. BAND MATTERS. The President suggested that the Chamber should lassrist the. local Band in some wav. He was very pleased that one of the Chamber members (Mr. Yeo) had taken up the position of chairman of the hand. Some two years ago the townspeople had raised about £llOO and with this the hand had been equipped with uniforms and first class instruments, but unfortunately the band was not making the progress it should. He congratulated the Council on providing a band room free of charge and for paying a subsidy to the baud. He assured Mr. Yeo'if the Chamber could assist in helping the hand it would be only too ready to do so. Continuing he said that other towns were experiencing difficulty in keeping up their bands and he would ho pleased if any members could bring forward any suggestions which would be of assistance to Mr. Yeo. hand in some way. ..Mr. Corn suggested that honorary, members be elected to the hand. Mr. Perreau considered that it would be advisable to endeavour to get local business-men to give preference to bandsmen when employing labour. Mr. Yeo (Chairman of the Silver Band) said that as a result of lack of work locally a number of bandsmen had had to leave Foxton recentlv. Provision had been made to have young members tutored, Mr Newth, having offered his services in this connection. The matter was held over for members to bring suggestions forward at the next meeting.
