THE FLOOD.

WHIROKINO ROAD UNDER WATER,

As a result of the recent heavy rains the Manawatu River, which was running high last week, commenced to overflow its banks at VYjhirokino on Saturday evening and the Foxton-Levin road is now under about two foot. of water for a distance of two miles. There was no water over the road when the Foxton Juniors journeyed to Levin on Saturday afternoon but on returning that evening flood waters had to be negotiated. - On Monday morning the mail contractor (Mr F. Rout) found it necessary to leave Foxton at a quarter to four and travel up to Palmerston N. and then down by the main road to Levin, a distance of nearly 60 miles, as against 14 miles by the direct route. He also engaged a boat which conveyed mails and passengers across the flooded area to connect with him on the Levin side and thus maintained his service. It is reported that there are one ;• two small wash-outs on the road. It is considered the road will be sufficiently clear to allow through traffic by Thursday. The Manawatu and Oroua Rivers are now practically back to normal. No flood waters have invaded the " Moutoa but the Shannon punt is out of action owing to the swollen state of the river and there is still water on the road on the Shannon side of the punt.
