THE SHANNON BRIDGE
THE BATTLE OF THE ROUTES,
At the recent meeting of the Horowhenua County Council a recommendation from their Works Committee was received and adopted, approving of No. 1 route as the approach road to the new Manawatu River bridge; the reasons given being that it was the least expensive and also affording the mot* safety to the travelling public. The No. 3 route is understood to he the route favoured by the Public Works Department. A special meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, at which the Mayor and all the Councillors were present, was held on Tuesday evening to discuss the County’s action, when strong exception was taken to the No. 1 route. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Spencer, seconded by Cr. J. Curran jnr. that the following resolution be forwarded to the District Engineer oi' the Public Works 'Department : “That the Shannon Borough Council agree to their allocation of the cost of the bridge conditionally that the road leads direct into the Shannon Borough. Further, that the Council strongly objects to the proposed No. 1 route, pointing out that for the past thirty years the road has led direct into the Shannon borough.” It was also decided to place the Council’s resolution before the member for fhe district, Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., asking him for his support.
