Searching a man who had been arrested for drunkenness, the Hastings police drew forth singles, fivers and tenners in such numbers (says the Tribune) as almost to create a suspicion that a bank robber had fallen into their hands. The inebriate proved to have been carrying on his person no less a sum than £195 11s 4d.
“America cannot supply the world with timber indefinitely, and my strong advice to New Zealand is to grow every tree it can,” said a Californian timber merchant who recently visited New Zealand. He thought that Japanese were adopting the most sensible policy by conserving tljeir forests and in the meantime obtaining supplies from other countries.
