ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE RAIDED.

THIRTY MEN All RESTED. Auckland, June 1.2. Detectives raided a room on the fifth door of the Chat field Buildings in Customs Street at 10 o'clock last night, and arrested over 30 men, who were later charged with being found in a common'gaming house. It is stated that the police made their way upstairs and silenced the door-keeper. They then rushed inside and surrounded a table at which a number of men were sitting and standing. A box of dice, money, and various apparatus was seized before those present realised the position. While an -exhaustive search was in progress one or two other men entered the room and were also arrested. One man was charged with keeping a common gaming house. The Wanganui-"liiyer Trust has decided to make an effort to replace European names along the Wanganui River with the proper Native names (says an exchange). Thus Wade’s Landing, the outlet Lor a large block that was taken over some years ago for soldier settlement, will in future he known as Retarukc. In some instances the Natives themselves changed names. “What do Atene and Koroniti mean"?” inquired a tourist on one occasion. He was considerably surprised when a Wanganui River Maori replied: “Oh, Athens and Corinth, two rather well-known places.”
