TWO MEN IN A BOAT.

OVER THE BAR IN A “FLATTIE.”

PICKED UP BY PILOT'S LAUNCH.

Two Beach residents (Messrs J. Collins and Goodall) had an unenviable experience one day last week. They left early in the morning in a "fiattie” to spend a day fishing over the bar. When 3.30 p.m. came and there was no sign of the fishermen some anxiety was felt by beach residents and Constable Owen was communicated with; At 4 o’clock Captain C*. Larsen and Mr. Skortt set out in search of the missing men in the pilot's launch and succeeded in locating them drifting some miles out to sea, the strong run-out of the Manawatu river, which, at the time was somewhat swollen with flood water, proving 100 strong for the single pair of oars in the boat, with the result that they had no option but to drift out to sea. The occupants of the “flattie” were taken aboard the launch and the boa.t taken in tow. Night was fast falling bv this time, however, find some apprehension was felt as to whether the launch would be able to make the bar in the dark as there were no beacons alight. Captain Larsen was able, however, to successfully pilot the vessel in and the party landed at the jetty at 6.30 p.m. little the worse for their experience.
