COUNTY ROADS

COMPLAINT TO HIGHWAYS BOARD.

“NOTHING TO GROWL ABOUT.”

A Palmerston North motor company lodged a complaint against the condition of the .roads in the Manawatn and Kairanga Counties at Thursday’s meeting of the No. 9 Highways Board, which met at Palmerston North.

Mr. W, E. Barber (chairman of the Manawatu County Council) stated that his Council had endeavoured to keep the roads well metalled, and did not think that the company had much to complain about. He admitted tljaUat times the roads were perhaps not all they should be, but they were quickly repaired, and taken generally. they were no worse than in other counties.

“We had a similar complaint,” remarked Mr. Jos. Batehelar (Kairanga County Council), who stated tlial il was the roads in the Manga one Riding that were complained about. “It is the .speed of the buses over the Mangaone roads that cut them up so badly. Fast traffic is the cause of all the trouble,” he declared.

The chairman (Mr. R. H. P. Ronavno) explained that this was the second complaint from the same source. “Personally, I have seen nothing in either the Kairanga or Manawatu counties to complain about. Certainly, there are times when the roads fall back, but they are quickly brought up to standard. If the company has no worse roads to go over then they have nothing to growl about,” lie said. “The whole thing is a question of speed limit, but how to arrive at this is a big problem,” remarked Mr. Batehelar, who considered that as the Palmerston North Borough Council did not contribute towards the cost of maintenance they should not have much to say. Mr. A. K. Drew (facetiously) : “Don’t forget that the welfare of Palmerston North depends on the motor services.” Mr. G. A. Monk: “It only goes to show that the allocation of the traffic fees are on the wrong basis.” The discussion then lapsed, no action being taken.
