Cook, manager of the Waitomo Caves Hostel, fell 140 feet down a. hole leading to an underground tributary of the Waitomo glow-worm stream last week, and was rescued four hours later unhurt. The dog had been taken out for a walk by a lady tourist staying at the hostel, and it was chasing a rabbit when it rushed through ferns into the hole. An unfortunate mishap at a critical stage during the running of the hurdle event at the Otaki races on Saturday cost two of the runners what prospects they possessed. The first circuit had been completed and it was when rounding the turn into the straight, preparatory to the run home, that Vexatious crossed his legs and fell, bringing Lady Passenger, who was racing directly behind, down also. An inquiry into the incident was later held, but, following the hearing of evidence, it was found that no blame was attachable to any one.
