BOOKMAKING IN HOTELS.

.WARNING FROM LICENSING BENCH. Wellington, Yesterday. The recent prosecutions against bookmakers avlio carried on their business in a city hotel were referred to at the annual ineeting of the Wellington District Licensing Committee to-day. “The police report shows that during the last quarter bookmakers were competed for doing business in three hotels, and barmen in three hotels Avere fined for bookmaking,” remarked the chairman (Mr W. G. Riddell). “There is not sufficient evidence to slioav that bookmaking was carried on with the knowledge of the licensee, but it is obvious that if bookmaking is carried on in any hotel there must be a lack of proper supervision, and it will be well for the licensees concerned to see that the practice is prevented as far as possible in their hotels. If proof can be brought that bookmaking is carried on knowingly, they render themselves liable under the Gaming Act. The (iffenee is regarded by the Committee with disfavour, and will certainly handicap licensees in future applications.”
