FOOTBALL.

BROADCASTING THE GAME.

The question of broadcasting a description of tin* football matches at Lancaster Park, and the possible effect of' this on the attendance were discussed by the Management Committee of the ■Canterbury Rugby Union recently. Mr. 8. F. Wilson said that he knew people who stayed away from a match if they thought they could hear a description over the wireless. The company should pay the Union something for the privilege of broadcasting. It was agreed that the Broadcasting Company must get permission before it could radio a description of any match in the future. SEVEN-A- SIDE TOURNAMENT. The results of the seven-a-side tournament, held in Palmerston North yesterday are as follows : Senior. —Feihling Old Boys with Old Boys as runners-up. Junior. —Miranui with High School as runners-up. Third grade. —Feilding High School with Paraparaumu as run-ners-up. Primary schools. —Rongotea with Lytlon Street as runners-up. IN RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. The Ranfurley. Shield changed hands at Napier yesterday, when Wairarapn defeated Hawke’s Bay by 15 to 11 after the latter had held the trophy since beating Wellington in 1922. The weather was dull but line, and the attendance about 11,000. The defenders took the field a much weaker side than last season and without the services of Irvine and Cooke, who turned out for Wjairarnpa. The game was not inspiring, but there is no doubt that the host team won. Hawke’s Bay forwards played splendidly, but faulty handling in the backs spelt defeat. Seal replaced Neal at fullback on the Hawke’s Bay side. The victory was mainly due to the kicking of Cundy, who sent four penalty goals across the bai, thus accounting for twelve out of the fifteen points scored by the winners. Taranaki defeated Wanganui at Wanganui yesterday by 20 points to 10.
