GOLD DREDGING.
OPERATIONS ON THE SHOTOVER,
It is evident that very shortly a determined effort will be made to wrest from the Shotover River, near Lake Wakatipu, as much gold as a party of skilled miners, aided by an unfailing water supply and a good sluicing plant, \yill be able to secure. The principal scene of action will be at what is termed the “Sugar Loaf,” an auriferous hillock lying at Big Beach, a few miles from the mouth of the Shotover River. When interviewed, Mr Sydney Smith, manager of the Big Beach Gold Mining Company', Limited, stated that practically all preparatory arrangements had been completed in connection with this work. A serviceable line had been laid right up on to Sugar Loaf. The dam, which was the largest of its kind in Wakatipu, had been thoroughly tested, and no signs of leakage were in evidence. It had a holding capacity sufficient for all the company’s requirements. Arrangements had been made for a consulting engineer to inspect tHe scene of operations at an early date. He fully expected that the company would have its first washup at the end of this month.
