OBITUARY
LEONARD AUGUSTUS SMITH, AGED 30 YEARS. Quite a gloom was east over Fnxton this morning, when it became known that Mr “Len” Smith had passed away. The late Mr Smith had been ill only for the past two weeks, contracting pneumonia from a chill. Of a gonial and kindly disposition, the late Mr Smith had surrounded himself with a large circle of friends, to whom his early demise came as a great blow. Deceased was born in Kaiapoi in 1801, and was the third son of Mr and Mrs F. Smith,’of Christchurch. At the age of 13 years he came to Foxton, where he resided with his aunt, the late Mrs J. Senior, at the Beach, and from then on he lias remained in Foxton. For a number of years the late Mr Smith had been employed by Messrs Levin and Co., in charge of their workshop at the wharf. Deceased was married in Foxton thirteen years ago last February, and on the 27th of this month lie would have reached his 37th year. The late Mr Smith leaves a widow and a young family of two sons and two daughters, besides four brothers: Messrs Harold and Baden (Christchurch), William (Thames), and Merton (New Plymouth), and four sisters: Mesdames Rond, Sanderson ,Fraser and Barrett, all of Christchurch. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, leaving St. Mary’s Church for the Foxton cemetery. The local Oddfellows will meet at the Lodge room at 1.15 p.m. on Saturday to attend the funeral of the late Mr Smith.
