SATURDAY’S RESULTS. SENIOR. County 6 v. Hui Mai 3. Wanderers 17 v. Otaki 8. Shannon 11 v. Awahou 0. JUNIOR. Foxton 11 v. Hui Mai 5. Weraroa 19 v. Shannon 3. THIRD GRADE. Fox ton 12 v. Weraroa 3. Wanderers 20 v. Shannon 12. SENIORS. SHANNON (11), AWAHOU (NIL). The above senior game, played at the racecourse on Saturday, provided plenty of thrills. From the kick off, Awahou forwards swept up the field in a series of forward rushes. Shannon retaliated, but their promising break-away was nullified by Westwood kicking to dead ball line. From the drop out, Hunt secured and by following up his high punt, had the Awahou line in danger. A free kick for an infringement in the serum gave relief to the local team. Both teams were throwing the ball about at every opportunity but faulty handling and deadly tackling prevented any scoring. Shannon returned to the attack but Westwood line kicked. Fuller secured and kicked and Hindu following up fast, had Shannon in trouble, but a twenty-five resulted. From the kick off Shannon swept upfietd but Hindu broke up the rush. Shannon being penalised for offside play, Moses gained ground with a good line kick. Nothing daunted, Shannon backs again got moving, but Fuller and W estwood were tackling too well. Hunt looked dangerous but a timely collar b> H. McGregor resulted in a twenty five. Shannon were not to be denied and a strong attack was kept up, Shamrock and Westwood both being instrumental in keeping them at bay. At this stage Roberts (Shannon) was put off. Shannon’s persistence was soon rewarded, Topi scoring well out. Hunt s kick was unsuccessful. SHANNON 3, AWAHOU 0. From the kick off Huff, Pine and Puller were associated in a passing bout, but Walls turned defence into attack, Westwood saving again. From a scrum the ball came out to H. Walls who scored a clinking try. Hunt made a good attempt to eon vert. Half time came shortly after with the scores SHANNON 0, AWAHOU 0. In the second spell, freed from the troublesome sun,* Awahou attacked determinedly, Fuller break-, ing away several times, but knock ons countered much advantage being gained. Pine marked, and fast following up by McGregor and McDonald saw Shannon in difficulties, but Hunt proved safe. Awahou kept pressing, Huff, McDonald and. Pine gaining ground, but Walls was very sure.. Awahou secured from a line out, but Shannon intercepted the pass and Hunt scored near the posts and converted. SHANNON 11, AWAHOU 0. From the kick, Mahi-lcd the visitors back, but, Shamrock and Fuller saved the situation. Awahou, throwing the ball about worked their way downfield, and Shannon were penalised in front of the goal. Moses missed an easy kick. Awahou forwards set up a hot attack, but Hunt securing, transferred play to midfield. McGregor and Huff were next prominent in a dribbling rush, gaining considerable ground. Shannon were penalised and Westwood had hard luck with the kick, the ball hitting the post. Awahou were nearly over with a passing rush, but Hunt’s deadly tackling saved the situation. Awahou kept up the attack, Westwood and Moses being prominent. Hindu showed up mith a jinky run, and Renata and Pine carried on, Shannon gaining relief from a mark. Awahou were still attacking when the whistle went for time, the game ending Shannon 11, Awahou nil. Mr. Neville was in charge of the whistle. For Shannon, Walls, Mahi, and Hunt wore outstanding, while Fuller, Moses, Westwood and Huff were the pick of the Awahou team. JUNIORS. FOXTON (11) v. HUI MAI (5). The above match was played at Manakau on Saturday in tine weather but a heavy ground. “A fine little team and they deserved their win,” was the remark of the referee (Mr. A. George) at the conclusion of the game. Foxton was without the services of Scott, Rankin and Taylor, all on the sick list. Hui Mai fielded a much stronger combination than that which played previously at Foxton. Swainsou, Eagle and Bowling had a day out. Foxton displayed good combination, biit the passing was very erratic. Their heavier opponents also had the advantage in the scrums. Foxton, on the whole, did not do themselves justice and will have to take their training more seriously. The game was not a brilliant exposition and at times was very patchy. Hui Mai (greens) attacked and Foxton failed to handle the ball and for a time the backs could not keep their feet. Eagle had a shot at goal from a free kick, but the attempt was poor and Foxton attacked and Ross sent Stevenson and Huff away and the latter got over in a good position and added the major points—Foxton s—Hui Mai nil. The greens attacked and Royal stayed the onrush. Hartley got away but a knock-on by Ross
spoilt an opening. Greens again in a loose rush attacked, and after some faulty handling by Foxton, Stevenson saved with a well judged line kick. Greens again attacked and Foxton accepted a force. Stevenson and Graham checked a green attack and Foxton forwards rushed play to green territory, where they accepted a force. Mishandling again let greens through and from a line-out Bowling crossed in a handy position and Swainson added the major points,—Hui Mai s—Foxtons—Foxton 5. Ross, Stevenson, Huff and Williams shifted play to green territory where Hornblow was pulled back and a score seemed imminent, but Foxton were penalised and play was centred. Foxton’s erratic passing was again responsible for a green break through which Stevenson stopped by finding the line in the centre. Another yellow rush to green territory and Graham was penalised in a handy position for holding the ball and half time was called. The yellows now played with more confidence and Anderson from a loose rush secured and dashed over. The kick failed—Foxton 8 —Hui Mai 3. Play now went back • and forth, Royal being conspicuous. Stevenson secured a mark just inside green territory and sent the ball over—Foxton 11—Hui Mai 5. From this on loose rushes by both teams and exchange kicks eventuated, the game ending in a win for Foxton with a margin of six points. The Foxton backs had a day off except that their tackling was excellent. Walls was safe at full hack, but lie strained his back during the second half and Stevenson also received a head injury. All the forwards kept Hui Mai on the ruff. An excellent spirit among the players of both teams characterised the play. Mr. George satisfactorily controlled the game. MAORI v. PAKEHA MATCH. Leach shortly afterwards dropkicked a goal for School. Ball next crossed for Awahou but the attempt ai goal was unsuccessful. Leach, brother of the previous scorer, crossed for School and D. Leach again scored a try which Weipihano converted. Hofmann scored Awahou’s final try and the game ended, School 12, Awahou 9. POSITION OF SENIOR TEAMS.
