FOOTBALL
THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO. The Herald of 28th May, 1889, contains an account of a football match played on the local racecourse between teams representing the Foxton Football Club apd Paiaka “resulting in a victory for the Foxton men by 6 points to nil.” The report continues: “As was expected, it proved to be rather a tough game, some interesting play being shown on both sides. The Paiakas exerted their utmost to score, but were prevented owing to the good tackling of their opponents. Only twice was the ground invaded, being forced to touch down on one occasion. The Paiaka men played “a really plucky uphill game, and with a little practice together, should be able to send out a team that would do credit to a much larger place. For Foxton some new blood was infused, and they will he a great acquisition to the club. The following were the teams:—Foxton: full back, R. Newth; half’s O. Robinson and F. Young; three quarters, J. Whyte and Hathaway; wings, J. Symons (captain), and C. Robinson; forwards, G. Edwards, F. Robinson, W. Cook, Fraser, T. Brebner, J. Purcell, F. Armstrong, and J. Bun*. Paiaka: —full back: A. Cuff; three quarters, J. Harris (captain), O. Gardener and A. Beauchamp; halfs, T. Pugh and G. Hudson; forwards, J. Atkinson, G. Bennett, W. Law, A. Langley, W. Langley, J. Henderson, J. Jackson, W. Wentsel, and D. Gardener. Tries were obtained by C. Robinson, W. Cook, Young, Symons, and Hathaway (2), but none were converted, some very poor attempts being made. The passing was extremely wild, the ball being thrown forward in nearly every instance. For the victors, F. Young and Hathaway were the pick of the backs, while C. Robinson, Fraser and Edwards did good work in the forward division. On the Paiaka side of the backs, O. Gardner, and J. Hams played well, the former tackling in good style. The forwards all played together and held their own in almost every scrum. The game was one of the best witnessed on the racecourse, there being no wrangling or bad language, which is generally the outcome of football matches. The umpires had not a very arduous task to perform, and only in one instance was the referee asked for his decision.” A committee meeting of the Foxton Football Club was held in Walls’ rooms last night, presided over by Mr W. Neville. : A motion of sympathy was passed to the President (Mr H. Hutchins) in his illness. The ladies’ ’bommittec were present, and agreed to attend to catering details in connection with the social evening to he tendered Foxton .Club members, in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday evening.
