The President’s annual report reads as follows: “In presenting the annual, report I have pleasure in stating that the attendance of members at meetings throughout the, year has been most satisfactory and considerable interest has been evinced in all matters of local, district and Dominion importance, submitted for discussion. During the year the Chamber, by way of innovation, entertained lady friends and representatives of District Chambers at a social evening. Some excellent speeches were delivered by prominent public men on matters of importance to the commercial welfare of the district. It is hoped that a similar function will be held during the coming year in order that views may be exchanged, thereby cementing the common interests of the whole district by unity of action and generous cooperation and thus obviating parochialism. “A lecture was delivered Mr. A. Seifert on the hemp industry and Messrs Stanley and Pringle, business agents of the New Zealand Railways, addressed the Chamber on the Railway Department’s policy in reference to vehicular traffic and freights. An address was also delivered by Mr. Holmes Runnicles, of Palmerston North, on ‘the value of music to a community.’ The lectures and addresses were very instructive and much appreciated. “New Court House: —The Chamber urged upon the Minister of Justice the necessity for the erection of a new Court House and invited r the Minister to come to Foxton. The Justice Department subsequently invited tenders for certain renovations to be effected to the ‘antient structure’ which, however, were cancelled at the Chamber’s request as such renovations would delay the erection of a new building. The Minister has signified his willingness to visit Foxton. Your President also conferred with the magistrate on the necessity for a new Court House, which the magistrate has recommended. “Postal and Telephone matters: — The Chamber, in conjunction with the local Postmaster, has been active in an agitation for an improved rural postal delivery and meetings with settlers have been held at Moutoa and Oroua Downs and the matter is now receiving attention’at headquarters. The Chamber’s request for an extension of hours for the convenience of private box holders was acceded to and other conveniences granted. A petition is now being circulated among telephone subscribers requesting a continuous telephone service. “The Port. —The Chamber has cooperated whenever possible with the Harbour Board during the year in all matters affecting the welfare of the port and has been in correspondence with the Railway Department re shipping its coal through the port. Upon this point the Department invites the Chamber to make enquiry re shipping facilities. “In reference to the proposed river improvement scheme, the Chamber approves of the ManawatuOroua Board’s scheme, being' of the opinion that the proposed cut would improve the river fairway. The Chamber has also urged upon the Harbour Board an improved means of road access to the seaside. “The Chamber has co-operated with the Horowhenua Power Board whenever possible and, 1 am pleased to report, that its recommendation tor the elimination of meter rents is to be given effect to. “Co-operative Dairy Factory: The Chamber discussed the question of establishing a dairy factory in the district.gnd this matter is still under consideration by a sub-committee. “At the suggestion of the Chamber the Borough Council and Harbour Board have consented to set apart areas for camping sites for touring motorists. “Resolutions upon various subjects received from other Chambers have been discussed, and in some cases supported. ‘>Your Chamber urged upon the Government the modification of its immigration policy. “In conclusion, I desire ti thank members, the vice-president and secretary for their assistance and enthusiasm displayed in the Chamber’s operations and to express the hope that there will he a continuation of such interest during the coming year.
