RESTRICTION ON MIGRATION
A TWO - MONTHS ’ EXTENSION.
Two months’ extension of the period during which it was decided to restrict the flow of immigration ,'iii far as arrivals in New Zealand are concerned was announced .by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) yesterday. It will be remembered that after the Prime Minister’s return from the Imperial Conference he announced that it had been decided to reduce to a minimum during the winter months the number of assisted immigrants arriving in the Dominion. The period of the reduced inllux was May, June, July and August, during which time assisted passages would be confined to separated families and domestic servants. The temporary change in policy was the result of the changed economic conditions in the Dominion and the prevalence of unemployment.
Cabinet, said the Prime Minister, had decided to extend the winter restriction period from four months to six months, thus taking the period to October. That, he added, would give further time for the absorption of those who were out of work.
