CONFIDENCE MAN SLIPS.

WILY “VICTIM.”

FARES PAID TO SYDNEY. SYDNEY, May 12.

A confidence man who went to New Zealand in connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York returned to Sydney within the last few days with a man to whom he had offered work on a banana plantation at Cairns, Queensland. The supposed victim, however, refused further dealings this morning, and decided to put up with his first loss 1 of £8 10s. He consulted the police, who are searching for the trickster. The story told to the police was that the confidence man met the New Zealander in Auckland and told him that he had an uncle who owned a banana plantation in Cairns, Queensland, and he was looking lor a suitable man to work for him. The New Zealander agreed to take the position, and sailed for Sydney with the confidence man, who paid fares and other expenses. The “victim” handed over £8 10s as a deposit in connection with the job he was to secure.

This morning the confidence man turned up at an hotel in the city to make, as he said, final arrangements concerning the trip to Queensland, but the New Zealander, who had told of his trip and prospects to others, showed a disinclination to talk business and the man decided to let matters drop.
