DUTY ON FLOUR.
“MAY NEVER BE MADE EFFECTIVE.”
Auckland, May 25.
In reply to the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce circular that further efforts be made to improve the trade relations with Australia, the Auckland Chamber has written to the Hon. W. D. Stewart, stating that the efforts he had made to improve the goodwill existing between Australia and New Zealand by a reciprocal tariff should be furthered as far as possible.
Quite recently, under pressure from the Canterbury farm and milling interests, the Minister announced that the duty on flour would be increased from £3 to £4 per ton. It lias not been stated when this added duty will opeate, and as several months’ notice has to be given the Australian Government when changes are contemplated, it may possibly never be made effective, and may be intended as a gesture only. \\ hen iii Auckland, Mr Coates was silent on this subject.
