DESTRUCTIVE BLAZE AT NAPIER.
DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £IO,OOO. Napier, May 17. Damage to the extent of nearly £IO,OOO resulted from a fire which broke out in the premises of Darby’s Stores, Ltd., fancy goods retailers, "early to-night. The shop is situated in the centre of Hastings -Street. The outbreak was seen within a quarter of an hour after closing, and it then had a strong hold. The flames spread through, the building with remarkable rapidity and quickly consumed practically the whole of the stock valued at about £7OOO. Only slight damage was dond to the adjoining buildings. The insurance on the building and fittings is £3500 in the Guardian Insurance office, and on the stock £3500 in the Guardian, Phoenix, and United offices. The insurances on the stock were reduced by £2OOO just a month ago on account of the quantity on hand at the time having been somewhat less than usual.
