RAILWAY COAL THROUGH THE PORT.

DEPARTMENTAL INQUIRY,

Mr Pringle, of the commercial branch of the Railway Department, accompanied by the local stationmaster, conferred with the President and Vice-pesident (Messrs J. K. Horublow and D. Christie) of tho local Chamber of Commerce last everting in reference to the transport of coal from Westport through the local port for railway purposes. The Chamber has previously approached the Department on this subject, as the coal is now hauled from Wellington. After some discussion, Mr Pringle asked that the Chamber ascertain whether a steamer can be procured to transport 16,000 tons of coal per annum, and the cost to the Department on trucks at Foxton. The Chamber will discuss the matter at its next meeting.
