AMBULANCE CHARGES

REDUCED TABLE ADOPTED

A table of reduced ambulance charges was submitted to Thursday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board by the managing secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps), who stated that the defects of the present system*were that for long distance runs the charge of 1/6 per mile (both ways) was somewhat excessive, and the minimum fee of 7/(> too low. He suggested that mileage be assessed one way, one mile to 10 miles, 3/- per mile; 10 miles to 20 miles, 2/- per mile; 20 to 30 miles, 1/6 per mile; 30 to 40 miles, 1/- per mile; 40 miles and over, 6d per mile, with a minimum ■fee of 15/- for cases transported to and from private hospitals; patients transported to and from private hospitals, apart from the minimum fee, to pay 4/- per mile, charged one way. District medical men are to be notified that the ambulance is to be used only for cot cases and cases of infectious diseases. In the past the ambulance has been called out for eases which could be more economically dealt with by the railway and motor cars.
