MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson yesterday, presided over by the chairman (Mr W. E. Barber). Also present were Crs. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, D. Reid, J. McKelvie, J. Fagan and W. Pearce. A request was received from theShannon Borough Council that preference be given to the local unemployed when the work on the approaches to the Shannon Bridge was commenced. —Decided to inform the Council that the request would be borne in mind when the work was commenced.

A request was also received from R, A. Wilson, Bulls, that that portion of the road from Oroua Downs school to the sea be opened and laid down for traffic. —Referred to the engineer to report on. TRAMWAY REPORT.

The tramway manager (Mr A. K. Drew) reported as follows on the month: —

“The chief items of traffic for the month were Drain, 152 tons; minerals and manure, 2201 tons; general merchandise 54-1 tons; stock, 45 trucks; metal, 226 trucks; timber, 4,170 sup. feet; eggs, 44 crates. Fares amounted to 19/-. The accounts showed a debit balance of £97 11/11 for the month’s working: TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT

The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. Berry) in his report stated that since the last meeting he had paid a visit to Tangimoana and made an inspection of the conveniences, finding them clean and tidy. The man in charge seemed to be carrying out his duties properly. On Raster Saturday and Monday, Mr Anderson and himself stopped all motorists on the Feilding-Awahuii road and examined their licenses to 200 if the Act was being complied with. There were! about 40 persons who failed to produce the current year’s,licenses. Some have since produced licenses. Fees collected were as follows: —License fees for offensive trades, £6 6/-; heavy traffic fees to date, £509 1/6; fines inflicted, £6.
