WEDNESDAYITES AT PLAY. FOXTON DEFEAT PALMERSTON Foxton tradesmen turned the tables on Palmerston N. at the racecourse yesterday afternoon by defeating them in the return match by 16 points, to 11, after a very willing game, and before an interested crowd of spectators. The teams were as follows: — Palmerston: —Shackle ton (Captain), Smith, Isaacs, Scorgie, Hollier, Rae, Burst al, Halpin, Sherin,! Harvey, McCleUland, Ozier, Griffith, Cookery, Fleming. Foxton: —A. Fuller, Rankin, J. Williams, D. Ball, Burnett, Huff, Small, Wright, Coley, Woods, R. Hornblow, W. Williams, Heta, Honour and W. F. Anderson (Captain). Foxton attacked from the start and Palmerston shortly after accepted a force. Ball made a dash for the line and transferred to Huff who failed to gather up the oval in a good position. A free kick relieved the yellows’ pressure and Palmerston rushed play to Foxton territory where Burnett was handy and stopped the rush. From a Foxton rush Jeff Williams streaked aeross. Huff failed to add. the major points. Foxton 3, Palmerston nil. Williams, fluff and Burnett again attacked and Huff essayed an unsuccessful shot at goal. Some up and down play ensued until Scorgie secured and transferred to McClelland, who crossed. Rae failed to add the major points. Palmerston 3, Foxton 3. Woods was prominent in a bustling Foxton rush, but Palmerston were equal to the occasion. Burnett and Co. again attempted to pierce Palmerston’s defence and a free kick enabled Huff to send the ball over. Foxton 6, Palmerston 3. • Shortly after a combined movement by Small, Burnett and Fuller and Huff saw the latter over. Huff added the major points. Foxton 11, Palmerston 3. Harvey put in a fine solo effort but wild passing mullified, which ended on the home line. McClelland and Scorgie again attacked and Huff relieved and play was transferred to Palmerston territory where a great forward scramble took place to cross over. Palmerston worked play back but Williams securing, transferred to Rankin, who dashed over and Huff made no mistake with the kick. Foxton 16, Palmerston 3. Palmerston now livened up and Cockery, after a good run, got over and the major points were added. Foxton 16, Palmerston 8. Shortly after, Palmeston shot the ball across field to Burstal, who streaked for the line and beat the opposition, scoring in the corner. Shackle ton took the kick but failed and the game ended Foxton 16, Palmerston 11. Mr W. Neville controlled the game. The forward packs were very evenly matched and it would be unfair to make comparisons. Huff and Burnett shared honours with Scorgie, Harvey and Cockery in the division. After the match the visitors were entertained to tea at Walls’. The return match with Palmerston has been arranged for Wednesday, May 25th. An endeavour is being made to arrange a match with Levin for next Wednesday. ' It is pleasing to note that the oldtime brute-strength minus brains method of play is fast dying out. Now and again one sees a bullocking forward apeing' the professional pug, but this class of forward is a passenger to any team. Weight counts in close work but playing the man is as dead as the dodo and Rugby has no place now-a-days for such tactics. The forward who cannot make a clean break without losing his temper is better on the line. \ The New Zealand Rugby Union has decided to play the following trial matches in view of the South African tour next year:—September 21:North Auckland and Auckland v. Thames Valley, Waikato and Bay of Plenty, at Auckland} Nelson, Marlborough and Golden Bay v. Buffer and West Coast, at Westport. September 25: Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast v. Wairarapa and Bush, at Napier. September 28: Wellington and Manawatu v. Wanganui, Taranaki and King Country, at Palmerston North. September 28: Canterbury and South Canterbury v. Otago and Southland, at Dunedin. October 1: North Island v. South Island, at Wellington. It was also ' decided that the following further trials should be played early next season to finalise the selection of the team: Minor Unions of the North Island v. Minor Unions of the South Island; Major Unions of the North Island v.
Major Unions of the South Island; Possibles v. Probables.
