Christchurch, April 30,

Thanking the Magistrate for leniency, a woman shoplifter broke into l tears to-day when convicted and discharged for stealing gramaphone records, which she said were to amuse the children.

The Magistrate said that his practice was to send such.offenders to goal, but lie would be lenient in this case as a child was expected. “As far as 1 am concerned, it at least will be given a fail' start.” The name was suppressed.
