MARCH GRADING RETURNS,

The grading returns for hemp, 'tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the montli of March have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows:—

Chalmers Bluff 22 723 512 8 Lyttelton One hundred and twenty-two bales were graded fine at Pieton. Thirty-five at Auckland, 143 at Wellington, 106 at Foxton and 4 at Lyttelton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:—Fine .122 (88), good fair 1220 (496), high fair 4706 (6119), low fair 2771 (2116), common 566 (524), rejected 288 (246), a total of 9673 bales as against 9589 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 84 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 2280, Wellington 2917, Foxton 2378, Wairoa 106, Pieton 127, Blenheim 184, Dunedin 142, Pt. Chalmers Bluff 1265, Lyttelton 92. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: — Ports Ist. 2nd. 3rd Auckland 20 284 244 Wellington 104 551 43 Foxton z 248 300 20 Wairoa Pieton 49 Blenheim Pt. Chalmers Bluff Lyttelton Dunedin Waikuku Thirty-eight bales at Auckland, 50 at Wellington, 23 at Foxton and 6 at the Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 421 (361), 2nd grade 1974 (1928), 3rd grade 424 (484), condemned 117 (122), a total of 2936 bales as against 2895, graded the same period last year, an increase of 41 bales. The number of hales graded at each port was: —Auckland 586, Wellington 748, Foxton 591, Wairoa 42, Pieton 49, Blenheim 69, Pt. Chalmers 95, Bluff 5G6, Lyttelton 26, Dunedin 4, Waikuku 160. Stripper tow: —Eight bales at Wellington and 10 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Nine at Auckland and 6-1 at Foxton were graded 3rd grade. A total of 91 bales as against 329, graded the same period last year, showing a decrease of 238 bales. Stripper slips: —Four bales at Auckland, 306 at Wellington, and 22 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. One hundred and forty-six bales at the Bluff were passed for export, and 17 were condemned. The total number graded was 495 bales as against 459 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 36 bales.
