DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the District High School Committee was held last evening, presided over by Mr F. Woods (chairman). There were also present: Messrs J. K. Hornblow, H. Hutchins, Alsop, M. E. Perreau, John Ross, A. Stevenson, W. H. Walton, R. Rangiheuea and the headmaster (Mr F. Mason), Correspondence was received from the janitor re water supply.— Decided to refer the matters to the incoming committee. From All Saints' vestry re the ■ storing of dangerous, articles connected with the science class and asking for their removal from the school-room.—The matter had been attended to by the headmaster. From the Education Board re occupation of old school residence and the converting of same into temporary class rooms for cooking and science.—Reported that occupancy would bo given up this week and that the Board would carry out the necessary alterations immediately. Accounts amounting to £lO 13s lOd were passed for payment. It was resolved to pay the travelling expenses of the school teams which competed at Sanson and those who are to compete at Levin and also the expenses of J. liirini. The erection of procuring goal posts were left in the hands of the chairman and Mr. Perreau. Mr. Alsop reported upon the side school at the Beach and was authorised to purchase /necessary equipment. Messrs Perreau and Stevenson were authorised to carry out certain work in preparation for planting a hedge on the western boundary. ITEADMA STEP’S REPORT. The headmaster reported that the roll numbers of the various departments were ns follows: —Primary 418, secondary 38, side-school 44, a total of 500. The percentages of attendances for the quarter were primary 80, secondary 90, sideschool 01. The low percentage has been due to an abnormal amount of sickness together with wet weather. Mrs. C. M. Price, M.A., finished up her duties as senior secondary assistant on March 10th and from March 11th till April Ist, Miss C. Buchanan ALA., filled the position as relieving teacher. Mr O. Doel, 8.A., who has been permanently appointed, took up his duties to-day. During the month, attention has been given to the matter of seating and application has been made for extra desks and chairs. On March 25th Messrs Davey of the Education Department and E. Hodge, nretitect of the Wanganui Education Board, paid a visit to the
school and discussed details with regard to the proposed building for the secondary department. Other matters referred to were the success of the. schools in various branches of sport and repairs and suggested improvement to grounds. — The report was adopted. The secretary presented the audited balance-sheet for the year, which was discussed and adopted.
