ADULTERATED WHISKY.

HOTEL LICENSEE CONVICTED. Hamilton, March 28. Two charges of selling adulterated whisky were admitted by J. F. Donne, licensee of the Ohaupo Hotel, in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court. Mi'. H. T. Gillies, who appeared for the Health Department, said that defendant sold a health inspector five samples jof bottled whisky. Two of the samples had been adulterated with draught whisky. The cases were not serious, as no profit had been made, draught whisky being as expensive as the bottled article. The liquor was of quality than the label indicated and contained tAvice as much extract. Mr. King, who appeared for defendant, said his client had a good record as a licensee. • There had been no attempt at exploitation. The Magistrate, Mr. Wvvern Wilson, said there did not appear to be any systematic deception. The deficiency of proof spirit Avas slight. Publicans were required to exercise the utmost care to see that the liquor retailed was what the label purported it to he. Unless the extraneous matter in the liquor Avas deleterious, it seemed that the whisky sold was of average good quality. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, £8 14s.
