Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, MARCH 26, 927. PALMERSTON NORTH OR MANAWATU?
THE agitation by the Palmerston X. Chamber of Commerce to rhaimo tiie name from Palmerston N. t-> Manavvatu will not meet wit it the unanimous approval of tinbusiness people or residents of that town, while the people throughout the Manawatu County will certainly object to the name of the county being applied to a centre outside its area, as Palmerston X. is encircled by the Kniranga County. Tt is admitted that the two Palmerstons in the Dominion and several other Palmerstons in other parts of the far-flung Empire lead to a little contusion, but to adopt Manawatu for Palmerston North would make confusion worse confounded for reasons too obvious to enumerate. If Palmerston X. really desires to change its name, a less absorbing or disrupting “cognomen” than Manawatu will have to be decided upon. What’s wrong with , “Nashville.” anyhow?
