TUNNEY AND DEMPSEY. STATEMENT BY THE CHAMPION. An American writer says that Jack Dempsey need not go through an elimination tournament tor an opportunity to get a return match Yvitli Gene Tunney, his conqueror, the heavy-weight champion. But Tunney is ready to meet any satisfactory challenger such a. tournament would produce. “Jack Dempsey can have his return match direct if the tournament does not develop another satisfactory challenger,” Tunney said, m reference to suggestions for an elimination series and of Dempsey s chances to meet hint again. Tunney, who is under contract with Tex Rickard to meet a challenger as yet unascertained, added: “I don’t want you to think I m throwing bouquets at myself, but it is the first time a heavyweight champion lias signed up to meet an unknown opponent four months after winning the title. I believe that every champion should defend his title at least once a year, and I intend to do it.”
