Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 197. HOME TO MAY PATRIOTISM.

“ALL roads lead to Palmerston North” is the opinion of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce and the latest suggestion put forward by that enterprising body is the levying of a motor tax to further improve the highways leading thereto in order to attract the countryside to that centre. Our countryside already bgars the burden of taxation for the maintenance of these roads both in county rates and license fees, which the enterprising Palmerston Chamber overlooks and seeing that the object of glassy surfaced highways are ostensibly to increase Palmerston's business turnover, to the detriment of business in adjoining towns, we would suggest that a more equitable arrangement would be the levying of a tax on Palmerston business people rather than on the already overburdened countryside. Its about time the adjacent townspeople aroused themselves to the fact that in building up Palmerston’s prosperity they are dwarfing their own vital interests. Also, in order to spread its own importance over the whole district, the Palmerston Chamber, octopus like, now desires to change its name to Manawatu. This is “coming it too strong” and the sooner the countryside realises the absorbing machinations of the Palmerston Chamber the better. The adjoining towns should arouse themselves to a greater loyalty and patriotism by circulating their money in the centres in which it is earned and so assist to build up prosperous local communities rather than foster stagnation.
