The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr, and Mrs. M. E. Perreau) left on a motor tour to the North on Sunday. They expect to be absent for about a fortnight. Air S. H. Poole local branch manager of the Bank of Netw Zealand, accompanied by Mrs. Poole and their daughter, will leave on a tour of Great Britain and the Continent next, month. As the result of an election at the Home of Compassion, Island Bay, on Saturday, Sister Mary Cecilia (Miss A. Crombie) was appointed successor to the late Rev. Mother Aubert. .Sister Cecilia, who is a daughter of the late Air. Charles Melville Crombie, formerly Commissioner of Taxes, joined the order eighteen years ago, and lias been connected with the Home of Compassion during the whole of that epriod. She was first assistant to the late Rev. Alother Aubert. A pleasant social function took place on Saturday evening when members of the local railway, Harbour Board and! Shipping Coy’s, staffs and carriers, foregathered at the residence of Air. IT. Hornblow, local stationmaster, to welcome him home after his recent wedding and to present Air. and Airs. Hornblow with tangible tokens of goodwill. Mr. Patterson, acitiug-stationmaster after making a brief congratulatory speech, called upon Air. Tregonning, of the clerical staff, to make the presentations of a handsome clock and salad bowl. In doing so he referrdd to the, esteem in which the recipients were held by those associated with the railway, shipping and transport service. On behalf of all he wished the recipients health and happiness. “For they are jolly good fellows” was lustily sung and Air. Hornblow suitably replied.
