ARTILLERY CAMP
“AT HOME” ON RACECOURSE. The weather was fine for the “at home” given on the racecourse by the sth Battery yesterday afternoon and a large number of people visited the camp, some coming from •as far afield as Wellington. Visitors were also present from Palmerston North. Before the commencement. of the sports the battery was inspected by Major Lyons, after which the men were dismissed and took part in the various events on the sports programme. Tentpegging, tug-of-war, musical chairs on horse-back, foot events and battery manoevures and firing all proved very interesting to the spectators, the battery manoeuvres showing that the men were well trained in handling the horses and guns. During the afternoon tea was served to the visitors on the lawn by the men and was much appreciated. The Artillery Band, under the eonductorship of Captain Herd, provided an excellent programme of music at intervals during the afternoon, to the delight of those present. The arrangements were carried out by Major Lyons, who was ably assisted by Captains Keen, Dillon, and Pollard of the RJSf.Z.A u Limits, Brown, Hall, Sind, Turner and Reeves. The following are the results of the sports events: — Tent pegging: ‘Bambadier 'Reid, C. sub-section. Bandsmen’s race: Sergeant Bowman 1, Bandsman Grant 2. Section tug-of-war: C. sub-sec-tion. This event 1 proved very interesting. Two limbers were attached back to back, and the men manned the ropes and wheels of their respective wagons. Musical chairs on horseback: Gunner Reid, of C. sub-section. Relay race: C. sub-section 1, A. sub-section2. Officers race, on horseback: Captain Dillon 1, Sergeant Christensen 2, Captain Keen 3.
