NATURAL GAS.
OLD FLOWS IN MOTTO A. When the circular letter from Professor Farr, of Canterbury College, seeking information as to any natural gas flows in the country was before the Manawatu County Council at Monday’s meeting, the chairman (Cr. Barber) recollected what he had observed in the past in this connection in the Moutoa. It was, he stated, within his memory that copious flows of inflammable gas bad been encountered in the Moutoa when boring for artesian water. Some of these had been set alight and difficulty had been experienced in extinguishing them, wet sacks eventually proving effective. At the suggestion of Cr. Barber it was decided to communicate with Mr. J. Chrystall, of Foxton, on whose land these flows had occurred, for further information. Experts of Canterbury Collego are conducting a search for the valuable gas helium, which, it is hoped, may be discovered in commcrcial quantities in some parts of New Zealand.
