MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, those present being: iCrs. W. E. Bai’ber (chairman), .J. Mc/Kelvie, H. J. Fagan, W. E. Pearce, J. Boyce, H. H. Hunt, and D. AY. Reid. From Public Works Department intimating that the Palmerston North branch of the Automobile Association had requested that portions of the Himitangi-Bainesse section of ttlie Main Highway be straightened and suggesting that the Council apply for a subsidy for such work. —'Referred to the engineer to ascertain whether the work, if undertaken, would be considered maintenance or ’construction as this influenced the Highway Board’s subsidy.

From Public Works Department approving of charges framed by the Council for the use’of the Manawalu river punt at Shannon and also agreeing to the installation of lights at the punt.—Received and charges to be advertised.

From A. Ross, R-ough and Co., Foxton, notifying the Council that they would! not he contributors to the cleaning out of the Puke Puke drains this season unless the lake outlet was first improved.—ln view of the fact that this question affected the whole drainage district and was more or less governed by special legislation enacted in 1918, the Council agreed to the chairman and Cr. McKelvie representing the Council at a meeting of ratepayers concerned which is to be held on Thursday night. It was also decided to notify Messrs Ross, Rough and Co., that the Council had no jurisdiction in regard to the Puke Puke drain.

ALTERATIONS TO RATE ROLL. The following alterations were made to the rate roll: —J. F. Perry to Mrs E. C. Poupard; Est. Rachael Hunt to R. R. Pearson; do., to C. S. Hunt; A. G. Gust to E. Simsonsen. TRAMWAY MANAGER'S REPORT. The tramway manager reported that for the month of February the chief items of traffic were: —Grain, 14 tons; minerals and manure, 1003 tons; merchandise, 73A tons; stock, 34 trucks; metal, 232 trucks; wool, 87 bales; eggs, 51 crates. Fares amounted to 15/5. The accounts shoav a debit balance of £53 6s lid. —'Received. ENGINEER’S REPORT." The County Engineer (Mr. G. Hickford) reported as follows on the Awahou Riding. Awahou Riding.—The grader and team lias been employed trimming up Motuiti road; about 60 chains of this road has been crowned up and reformed, and also 26 'chains of Wall’s road. The team and grader is now working on the Karikari Road. The painting of the ironwork on the Whirokino bridge is progressing favourably, and it might be. advisable to paint the whole of the bridge while the painters are on the work. Extensive repairs have been carried out at the Shannon punt, including gates, hurdles and the erection of fences to facilitate the loading of cattle and sheep. Tramway. —The surfacemen for the past month have been employed replacing decayed sleepers between Sanson and Rongotea siding, and at the present time the gang is weeding and cleaning the curve at Himitangj* A few sleepers came to hand during the past month, but they are short of the number promised by the 'contractor. Two concrete culverfs are required under the tramline between Oroua Downs and Hiniitangi as the present culverts are not largo enough to carry off the storm water. Owing to pressure of work I have not been in a position to get out the plan for the engine shed at Sanson. —Received.
