CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The reported closing down of the Moutoa flax swamp at the end of April for an indefinite period will result in the closing down of several of the mills which draw their supplies from the Moutoa swamp, and the consequent throwing out of - employment of a number of people Avith families to support. It Avill also have a bad effect upon local tradle generally, as Foxton depends to a large extenit upon the llax industry. Not only Avill it seriously affect Foxton, but it will decrease our exports. I think, sir, •that this matter should be taken up by the Chamber of Commerce, business people and Flaxmills Employees’ Union, and that representation should! be made to the Government Avith the object of acquiring the flax area, and to lease it under proper safeguards for flax cultivation, and to ensure a continuous supply to millers. The cost of production should also be revieAved and, instead of that iniquitous sliding scale per ton, it should be charged at per ton, after making the necessary allowances for taxation, etc., also alloAving a fair margin for profit to the OAvncr. The industry is almost crippled as regards the cost of production, for it does not matter how high the price may bo for fibre in the market, the sliding scale gets the take off, but avlicii that price drops on the market to such an extent, as to reduce such profits to that Avliieh Avill not compensate the miller, then again the necessity for an equitable Avorking arrangement- is evident. ' Should a body of Avorking men hold up an industry, -the law is brought into action demanding that they show it jusit cause —then why not the same apply in this ease? Thanking you in anticipation, —I am, etc., CIVIS.
