SCHOOL PICNIC.

A SUCCESSFUL OUTING

Yesterday the annual State school picnic was held on the Ashhuret Domain in beautiful weather. A special train of twelve carriages conveyed about sixhundred kiddies and parents to Ashhurst, leaving Foxton at 8 a.m. and arriving at the destination about 9.30. On arrival at the grounds one or two sports events were got off while the “billy boiled,” when rotresbinenls were handed round. The children were then free until after lunch when the remainder of the sports programme was run off. This year the committee did its own catering, the staff and committee and committeemen’s wives preparing the food etc., which was handed round to the children who were seated on the ground in rows. There was food, fruit and lollies in abundance and the catering arrangements were carried out systematically and well. A baby show was a feature of the day. The entries were as follows: Babies Robinson, G. King, Mansfield, C. King, Thompson, G. F. Smith, W-al button, McFail, G. Rough, Howe, Bangs, Johnston, and R. Coley. Mr. Warwick, assisted by two other gentlemen acted as judge and awarded the first prize (Mr. Corn’s box of soap and powder) to Baby Mansfield, the second prize going to Baby Rough. After the sports the children spent a happy time in the bush and wandering round the delightful grounds and when train time arrived it was a happy but tired throng that boarded the waiting carriages. The day went off without any mishap of any kind to mar its enjoyment and everyone proclaimed it the most successful excursion yet.

The committee is to be congratulated on their arrangements for and Ihe success of the picnic. Everything went without a. bitch and a very pleasant time was spent by all present.
