BIGAMOUS MARRIAGES.
JUDGE’S WARNING TO MAORIS
Wanganui, February 18
HLri Turin, found guilty of bigamy, was ordered by Mr. Justice McGregor to come up for sentence if called on within two years, and to pay £2O towards the cost of the prosecution. His Honour issued a warning to Maoris generally regarding bigamous marriages. Accused had evidently been influenced by some other person to go through a second form of marriage. It had been suggested that Katana and his followers up the river had been advising the Maoris that the only proper form of marriage was through their church. Such advice was entirely wrong, and such persons were liable to be brought up for punish nient.
